Time and frequency domain measurement methods for extraction of the power cable propagation constant

R. Papazyan

hree methods are presented for the extraction of the propagation constant of power cables. The first one is using a LCR Meter and provides measurements in the 20 Hz to 1 MHz frequency band. The second method is based on Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) and extracts the cable characteristics from 1MHz to 300MHz.

S-parameter measurements with a Network Analyzer (NA) deliver the propagation properties for the frequencies between 300 kHz and 1.3 GHz. The extraction techniques are demonstrated for a single-phase 12 kV cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) cable.
